Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Are you an avid poker tournament player? Are you measuring your poker tournament success? What poker tournament gives you the best ROI? How much time and money do you spend in playing poker tournament? All these questions are very important for any serious poker tournament player who play poker tournament for living and not just for fun. Now it’s very important for any poker tournament player to measure their performance while playing various poker tournaments. And ROI is the best way to analyze your performance for any poker tournament. There are many poker tournament players who measure their actual performance by looking at their ROI (Return on Investment).

How to calculate your ROI in a Poker Tournament

Calculating your return on investment or ROI for a poker tournament is very simple and quite effective for any poker player to evaluate their overall performance. If you ask a poker tournament player about his results, he probably talks about ROI but not about the ring game play. It’s very easy to calculate your return on investment for poker tournament. For that, you just need to apply this simple formula:

ROI= (Total Profits/ Total Amount of Entry Fees) x 100

For example, if you are playing in a $20+$2 SnG with $22 total entry fee and you win the first prize, which is $90. Your profit is $68 (Profit amount= your total prize money- your total entry fees). Now the ROI for this Poker Tournament is:

ROI= (68/22) x 100= 309.09

If you play 10 SnG’s for $22 each, your total buy-in is $220. And if you make the places in money in half of your played poker tournaments, and your total prize money is $270. Then your total profit will be $50 (270-220).

And the ROI will be:

Total ROI= (50/220) x (100) =22.7%

Anything between 20% to 50% is supposed to be a good ROI for any SnG Tournament. If a player achieve as high as 50%, He is extremely a good poker player. The only thing that you have to keep in your mind is, to keep your ROI high as much as you can and try to play at higher levels.

ITM% in Poker Tournament

ITM (In the Money) is one another measurement that poker player use to measure their performance in poker tournament. ITM determines the percentage of time that a player actually place high enough in the Poker tournament to get some cash prize. If you are playing 9 players SnG tournament where the pay outs are for top 3 players, you can expect a 33% ITM if everyone plays equally.

Every poker tournament player try to get in the money percentage more than 33% and if you are good than other poker tournament players, you can make the double of the time, or may be 2 poker tournaments out of 3. You will rarely find any poker tournament players with that kind of ITM%, as per as my concern, I have never seen any poker tournament player around me hitting the money in that much percentages. However, ITM% is quite important to consider while playing any poker tournament as it will help you to determine how much money you are making with what poker tournament.

If you are a serious poker tournament player, it’s quite necessary for you to measure your performances. You can’t just keep on playing by investing dollars and dollars without knowing your actual performance. And once you have records for at least 100 poker tournaments, you can initially measure your ROI% and ITM% and your numbers should be correct within 5% or so of what your actual percentage is. Merely knowing some poker tips is not enough, You must have to work on calculating the ROI to measure how much money you are making after investing so much. The more records you accumulate by playing various poker tournaments, the more accurate evaluation you will have about your poker performance. You can also manage and improve your poker performance by tracking your ROI% and ITM%.
